The UWC Feral Cat Project (TUFCAT)
Mission Statement PDF Print E-mail
  • Our immediate goal is to control population numbers (by sterilisation) and to provide food and veterinary care for the resident feral cat colonies at UWC.
  • We aim to accomplish zero population growth within colonies, and to maintain a well-organised monitoring and feeding programme, once this has been achieved.
  • The overall aim and objective of the project is to change commonly held, negative perceptions about cats through education and research.
  • To enhance the ethical status of animals through academic research, teaching and publication.
  • To educate UWC students, staff and the public about the important and often supportive roles played by cats in human societies throughout history.
  • To counter misinformation about cats in general and feral cats in particular, and to demonstrate the efficiency of feral cats, as rodent catchers.
  • To instill respect and compassion for animals, nature and the environment among the youth.
  • It is a further objective to fund the training of disadvantaged students so that they can conduct research that enhances the welfare of animals and empower them to publish their findings, as well as run educational workshops on campus.
  • To establish a bursary fund to assist previously disadvantaged students with an interest in "animal issues" and/or those who are employed by the project on a work/study basis, to complete their degrees.
  • Create further employment for financially needy students and/or other individuals via campus based book sales/shop and the actual feeding and cat trapping.
  • To actively fundraise and generate income by selling of second hand books and magazines, thereby helping to instill a "culture of reading" on campus.
  • We would further like to enhance the profile of UWC, as a model for humane cat control and to demonstrate the compatibility between human and animal welfare issues.
  • To offer advice where possible and draw on campus based expertise to develop resource materials, so that this information can be shared and made available to the broader community.
